It's your choice: Where to go in Tenerife

There are two major international airports on Tenerife, Tenerife South Airport and Tenerife North Airport. Catch a direct flight from one of many UK airports to the southern airport and rent a car in Tenerife to begin your island adventure. The capitol city, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is located in the north-east and has the largest population and a bustling nightlife for holiday guests. With nearby beaches, Playa de Benijo and Playa de las Teresitas, it's no wonder this holiday destination is at the top of so many traveller's list. Hop in a rental car from Tenerife's northern airport, it's just a 15 minute drive to Santa Cruz. The cool breezes of the Northern Atlantic Ocean make even the hottest of summers ideal on this Canary Island, but the year round sunny temperatures give purpose to the nickname "The island of eternal spring."

Although being topless is common on public beaches, the nudist beaches of Playa la Pelada and Playa Montaña Roja are ideal spots to let it all hang out. Although these beaches have no facilities, there is a parking area nearby for when you rent a car in Tenerife. Playa de las Américas, known for its nightlife, is the strip to see if you're looking for a night on the town.

Important info about Tenerife

Located off the coast of Africa, Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands. The diverse landscape offers rocky beaches made of volcanic stone and soft sandy beaches perfect for sunbathing. Visit one of four national parks on Tenerife: El Teide is the third tallest volcanic mountain on Earth with a summit nearing 4,000km. Teide National Park, now a World Heritage Site, is one of the most popular destinations on the island. Visitors who book a free permit in advanced can travel to the mountain's peak though there are many other hiking paths to explore should you choose. The eastern side of the park houses the Teide Observatory which is the largest solar observatory in the world. On a guided tour guests can view solar flares and sunspots through a solar telescope, engage in an astrophysics workshop and explore the inner workings of a nocturnal telescope.

Our tour suggestion for Tenerife

When you drive around yourself, the entire island is at your fingertips to explore. The winding roads of the countryside are thrilling even for seasoned drivers. Traverse the scenic western road of TF-436 that starts in Santiago del Teide and ends in the quaint village of Masca; the pavement follows a zig zag through the lush landscapes of the Macizo de Teno mountains, with 15 hairpin turns at an elevation of 621m above sea level. Follow the coastal drive on TF-47 from Adeje to Los Gigantes for ocean side views and the resort destinations of Playa San Juan, Alcala, La Arena and Puerto de Santiago before ending in Acantilados de los Gigantes. The 500 metre vertical walls drop into the ocean and makes a striking photo backdrop. Visit the black sand beaches and participate in a water sport at this destination.

What to bring to your friends from Tenerife

An "I Love Tenerife" t-shirt or shot glass is a quick holiday souvenir sure to delight any friend or family member, but those looking for a thoughtful take-home present also have a variety of unique options. Print a canvas photo of your holiday, whether it's at the Top of El Teide or in front of the towering cliffs of Los Gigantes – this unique gift will never go out of style. Bring home a bottle of Mojo sauce, the red sauce is made of hot and sweet peppers and the green is a mix of coriander, garlic, and parsley. These tangy variations are commonly served atop fish, potatoes or other vegetables. Take home a bit of Tenerife culture with a goatskin wine bottle, a tradition started by the island's original inhabitants. The pouch will keep wine cool during even the hottest of summer days.
