As the city covers an area of 469 square miles, Los Angeles holidays are made much easier when you pick up your rental car at LAX airport on arrival. Start by checking out Hollywood, one of the most visited parts of the city. Stroll along the Walk of Fame along Hollywood Boulevard, and pick up a map of the stars' houses and see where the rich and famous live. Take time out to drive along famous Sunset Boulevard, which runs 22 miles west from downtown LA to the coast at Malibu, for a day at the beach. Other parts of the city worth exploring are upmarket Beverly Hills, where you'll find the shoppers' mecca, Rodeo Drive; and Santa Monica's famous pier, Muscle Beach, and miles of golden sands – remember to pack your sunscreen!
Renting a car in Los Angeles gives you the opportunity to get out of the city and into the surrounding countryside. One of the best family days out is at Disneyland California, 24 miles from downtown LA in the city of Anaheim. Meet Mickey and the gang, and spend the day experiencing the rides and magic of Disney. LA's other main theme park, Universal Studios Hollywood in the San Fernando Valley, has a similar mix of rides and shows. No California break would be complete without a selfie in front of the iconic Hollywood sign – for the best views, leave the car at Lake Hollywood Park and follow the trail. Check out Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the largest art museum in the western United States. It's home to an extensive permanent collection and temporary exhibitions by famous artists from around the world.
Los Angeles, the second-most populous city in the United States after New York, is best known as the centre of the American film and television industry. It's a sprawling city, and it's hard to tell where LA stops and the suburbs begin. To the northeast of the city are mountains and a large national park – the perfect places to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Los Angeles' beaches are also world famous, and with an average of 250 sunny days per year, it's easy to see why. The climate, which is warm year round, rarely sees temperatures drop below under 20°C, even in winter. Los Angeles is a diverse city offering food, culture, and entertainment from all over the planet.

Driving is easy in LA, a city built around the motor car. Rent a car at Los Angeles airport and follow the wide, multi-lane roads for 18 miles into the city centre. The maximum speed on most California highways is 65mph. Some highways have a higher limit, of 70mph, and this will be clearly indicated where applicable. On undivided highways, the limit is 55mph. Both drivers and passengers are legally required to wear a seatbelt, and the blood alcohol limits are the same as in England and Wales. It's also illegal to have open containers of alcohol in the car, so if you've stopped off at a supermarket to pick up beer for later, make sure you store it in the boot rather than on the back seat.
